- What is a Standalone, virtualized or sandboxed browser or Mobile Emulator, and how does it help me to cross-browser test a web site?
- A Standalone, Sandboxed or virtualized browser refer to a browser that has been repackaged into a single exe file. Standalone browsers run instantly on any Windows desktop. All browsers run as a single executable - no extra DLLs, data files, service installations, or runtime dependencies. The Standalone browsers allow the application environment, including file system, rendering engine and registry subsystems, to be almost completely isolated from the rest of your PC. Essentially running in it's own sandbox, sharing only some basic components and thus preventing the virtualized browsers from interfering with one another or with any other applications installed on your PC. This allows you to run multiple browsers on the same machine that otherwise wouldn't have been able to. It also allows you to interact with pages, test secure sites, or sites on your local machine. You can for instance run IE6, IE7 and IE8 at the same time alongside each other. All Standalone browsers have Adobe Flash pre-installed to allow you to test your web site's flash rendering.
Please note: Although IE, Chrome and Opera can run multiple versions of the same browser alongside each other, for Firefox you can run only a single version at any given time. (Multi-Browser 2.0.4 is bundled with Standalone Firefox versions 2, 3 and 3.5). For more information see the "How it works" section. - Back to top
- What is a Screenshot image browser and how does it help me to cross-browser test a web site?
- A screenshot image browser is primarily used to test web site's look and feel. To test a web page using screenshots, a user enters a publicly accessible URL into Multi-Browser Viewer. The URL is then loaded into your selected browsers on our Network of machines and full page, high quality screenshots are taken. The screenshots are then downloaded into Multi-browser Viewer, onto your local machine, where you can inspect them closely for any issues. The screenshot cross browser testing method is the more traditional way of testing, and is similar to some of our competitor services like browsercam.com or browsershots.org. However, Multi-Browser Viewer has the widest range of browsers available (55 Browsers for Mac, Windows and Linux as of May 2010) and we maintain our own network to ensure reliability and frequently updated browsers. For more information see the "How it works" section.

- Can I test a web site on my local network, local machine(localhost) or pages that are protected by a login screen?
- Yes, you can. Using the Standalone browsers you can browser to any page that is accessible from your PC, including pages on your localhost, Intranet or pages protected by a login screen. That is a major advantage Multi-Browser Viewer has to some of our competitors, which only allow you to test from their network(using VNC connections for instance to access a particular browser).
